Exigency (Protectors of the Elemental Magic Book 2)

Author: Marnie Cate
Title:  Exigency
Series: The Protectors of the Elemental Magic Series
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy/Romance

Synopsis

There is a world around us that most people don't take the time to see.

Mara Stone's world was shaken, but she is a fighter. Facing new adversaries, Mara is learning what it truly means to protect the magic. As she starts to rebuild her life, the web of her family's secrets continues to unravel. Mara is forced to face her fear of losing everything she holds dear.

She said that you would be a challenge to my children. I thought I had made the right choice when I selected Eliza. If only Mae had not interfered. But, enough of those sad thoughts, I think the two of you will be perfect replacements.

When Mara and Cole find themselves in the cold world of Snowstrum, they will have to choose either to be true to their promise to protect the magic, or to follow their desires. Magic may not be enough to free them from the icy fortress they are trapped in.

The second book in the Protectors of the Elemental Magic series, Exigency is a compelling, magical young adult fantasy tale.

Excerpt

As I continued walking, the air died down but I quickly found myself encompassed by a dense fog. My hair was no longer blinding me but I could barely see my hand in front of me. A soft voice in me told me to just to keep walking and I listened until I stepped into cold water.
"Damn it," I cried out.
Not sure where I was I stopped and called, "Air, please blow away this fog and let me see where I am."
Sitting down, I waited while the moist vapor drifted away showing me that I was on the rocky shore of Sparrow Lake. Sitting down, I wrapped my arms around my legs and gently began to rock myself. How did I get so far from home? I felt as if I was losing a connection with reality. I kept telling myself that if I just listened to my heart everything would be as planned. As I questioned my recent behavior and my faith that the Goddess would guide me, I heard a crackling sound behind me. Turning to the direction of the noise, I saw a shadow quickly dart through the tree line.
Calling out, I said, "Stop! Who are you? Why are you following me?”
No response came from the forest. Standing to face the unknown, the cold breeze off the lake picked up and covered my arms with goosebumps. Rubbing my arms frantically to warm up, I called out again.
"Whoever is out there, show yourself," I said.
"With all the magic you hold, you could easily climb up the mountain and give them what they deserve," said the bewitching voice of a woman.
"You could start a little fire. One little ball of your magic could ignite the forest surrounding them. It would grow and grow until it would burn the mansion down. Or you could call a great wind and bring everything and everyone inside down into a crumbling ruin."
With more anger, the voice said, "And there is always my favorite. You can call the rain and demand it to pour down. Calling more and more of your magic until you finally send everything off the mountain. Mudslides happen all the time."
"Or if you wanted to be lazy, you can just ask the ground to shake and shake and shake until you have created dust out of them all."

The voice taunted, "Wouldn't it be so easy? Don't you think they deserve to be punished for what they did…?”

Author Interview: L.E. Fitzpatrick

Do you have a favorite character you’ve created?
I really love Roxy. He’s one of the supporting character of THE RUNNING GAME, totally self-absorbed, everything is an innuendo, and he’s absolutely amoral. It’s very liberating writing him, especially as a lot of the other characters are dark and tormented. He comes into each scene, flirts with everyone, manipulates them, and never takes any responsibility. But he’s also got a heart and his own moral code. Plus writing arguments between him and my other character John Smith is the perfect way to pass any evening.

Everyone likes to compare. What book, TV show, or movie would you say has the most similarity to your books?
I’ve been asked this question over the years and I think I’ve finally worked it out. THE RUNNING GAME is a like if Guy Richie did Blade Runner. It has a lot of imagery from Blade Runner, but it’s very British, it’s action packed, and dialogue driven like a Richie film. It has lots of character stories and threads which all come together at the end of the story, kind of like Rocknrolla.

What made you decide to publish your first book?
I’ve written all my life but there was a point when I’d finished my book DARK WATERS, that I just said to myself it’s time. I self-published it and it’s still a piece I’m massively proud of.

Your favorite book and why? (Not written by you)
Black Angel by John Connolly. It’s set in the middle of his series but it was the first time I read a book and thought screw genre this guy has angels and private detectives fighting in a bone church and it’s freaking awesome. John Connolly is the greatest thriller author to date. I can’t read his books before bed without getting nightmares… but I read them anyway.

Best writing advice for newbie authors?
Keep your expectations low and your ambitions high.

Do you have children? I’m sure you have an abundance of embarrassing moments if you do. Shout out the most embarrassing one you’re willing to share.
I have a seven year old son who’s going on 70. He’s not so much embarrassing as a heck of a lot smarter than me. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in his sitcom. I regularly post things that he has said to me, both privately and publically on my FB page. Here’s just one of the posts:

Son pulls out a plastic bag from his school trousers.
Me: "Why do you have a plastic bag in your pocket?"
Son: "I don't... It's two bags..." And off he goes.

Best mode of transportation: Unicorn or Dragon?
Dragon – fire, wings, and the insurance on them is cheaper.

Favorite movie of all time?
Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest.

Favorite song or artist/band?
Flogging Molly’s FLOAT

Night or Day?
Night

Gremlins or Goonies:
This is a hard one. I think I’m gonna have to say Goonies, because they never say die.

Superman or Batman:
This is less hard. Batman. Always Batman.

Silence while writing or music blasting:
Music – normally 6 Music.

Coffee or Tea:
Coffee if you’re making.

Stephen King or Dean Koontz:
Mr King, even if you don’t like his work he’s a huge supporter of writers and you can learn a lot from him.

I know this is going to be hard…. share only three sentences from any of your books.
These are all from THE RUNNING GAME:

The prison was countrywide because she was a prisoner on the run and that would never change.

“Sometimes I think you’re not happy on a job unless someone ends up dead!”

Sure, he could shoot a man through the head with his eyes closed, but he had a sense of humour--what else really mattered?

Share the opening line from up to three of your books.
“Five past Eleven.” THE RUNNING GAME
“The world was white.” SAFE HAVEN
“A waltz erupted in the rapids.” DARK WATERS

What are you currently working on?

Currently I’m working on Book 3 in the Reacher Series. Book 2 is due to go for editing next month and will hopefully be out sometime this year.

Have a great day. Read a book and laugh!!!

The New Finding Me Cover by Dawn Brazil

I'm so excited to present the new cover for my YA Urban Fantasy, Finding Me. It is set to re-release on March 3rd.

Here, my lovelies, is the new cover, designed by Yosbe Designs.

And here is the blurb:

Sixteen-year-old Chloe Carmichael’s perfect world is in chaos.

It’s not because she has a vision of her boyfriend murdered and then he’s found dead exactly as foreseen. It’s not because she suddenly has the ability to move objects when she’s upset. It’s kinda cool to close a door without touching it. And it’s most definitely not her overbearing mother who only cares about appearances. Chloe has already grown quite accustomed to her family’s distance.
So what has Chloe cringing in fear?

It’s having to become another person for a new group of people. She knows she’s not perfect, but apparently she was in another life. In that other life, she was known as Amanda. Amanda was perfect. Chloe, not so much. Her new friends won’t allow her to forget.

Chloe struggles with a love that exposes the soul. It’s a love that defies reason. It’s a love that speaks to her heart and demands attention.

It’s the stench of impending death that hovers over her every move.
It’s that final threat as she tries to acclimate to a life of super human proportions.
It’s the enemy she can’t see and doesn’t remember.
And most importantly, it’s never discovering who she really is that truly frightens her.

About ME

Dawn wants to live in a world fully inhabited by fictional characters. She thinks fictional characters are cooler than real people; except herself, of course. But since the world is not comprised of dreamy book boyfriends, she creates them for everyone to fawn over. Her debut novel, Finding Me, book 1 in the Finding Me Trilogy, is set to release on March 3, 2016.

When she is not writing, she can be found with her nose in a book—swooning over another book boyfriend, drying up tears from a recent heartbreak, or shouldering a wound she received in battle. She also loves to create magic in the kitchen, with an array of inspiring dishes she pulls from Pinterest. Dawn lives in South Texas with her sports-obsessed husband, three technology-infatuated teenagers, and her great big colossal imagination.

She is currently editing the final book in the Finding Me series, Becoming Me. The book is set to release the summer of 2016. She is a master juggler and is working on two other young adult standalone novels: a high-fantasy tearjerker and a science fiction story with a romance that will make your heart ache.

Excerpt:
One of the dishes slipped from Niveah and Tobey swiftly caught it.“ Great reflexes. I’m going to have to add you to my Fantasy lineup.” Tobey stopped short. “Add me?” He turned to her, his hands dripping. Niveah stifled a smile as she remembered how sensitive he was about the subject. She backed up slowly, and he followed. “Um, well, look at the time.” She looked at her wrist and realized she didn’t wear a watch. “I think I had better be going.” Just as she turned and was about to bolt, she felt wet hands grab her shirt and pull her back. “Tobey Fine, you’re getting me all wet.” Tobey groaned, his breath warm against her ear. “God, I hope so.” He kissed the sensual line of her neck as she felt him fist her shirt. Niveah rubbed her hand over his forearm, giving him more access to her neck. Her nipples puckered against the inside of her bra. “Niveah,” his voice was low and gruff, “I can’t fight this anymore.” He kissed her slowly as his hands moved across her abdomen, pressing her back closer to him. “If you want me to stop, tell me.” She turned in his arms and hooked her arms around his neck. His brown eyes sparkled as they pleaded with her to tell him what he wanted to hear. She could feel his hands urgently caressing her back. “Don’t stop,” she moaned…

Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic

In anticipation of the release of the Exigency, the second book in the Protectors of the Elemental Magic Series, Marnie Cate's beloved first novel, Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic, will be available on Kindle for $0.99 / £0.99 February 5th – 11th 2016

Author: Marnie Cate
Title: Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Synopsis
Hiding the truth from you is no longer protecting you. Sit and I will tell you what you need to know.

With those words, the secrets of my great grandmother, Genevieve Silver, were unburied and my role as a protector of the elemental magic was revealed.

My name is Marina Addisyn Stone but Mara is what my friends and family call me.  I had always felt that there was something missing and that nothing was permanent. Why would I feel that way?  I was being raised with my little sister by my grandmother that loved and doted on me. Then, there was Cole Sands. Who could forget the blue-eyed boy that had stolen my heart? What more could a girl need?  I always thought I was just being dramatic and that bad things do happen to people but that is part of life.  People die.  People go away. Little did I know that with one secret, my life would change forever and my new world would be surrounded by the world of elemental magic?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Excerpt
As I felt my determination build, the mirror in front of me began to change and the reflection filled with rippling water. The image made me think of the choppy water of Sparrow Lake. At first, the small waves were calm but the speed and intensity of each movement of the water grew. I found myself being splashed as the waves grew harder and began to slap against the mirror. Standing up, I moved away just in time to watch the mirror before me shatter and the violent water burst out towards me.
The room began to fill with rushing water. Feeling around the room, I searched for an exit. Behind the shattered mirror, I only found solid rock. Looking to the ceiling, I could see the same hard stone. Feeling the emotions build inside me, I began search the floor and walls around me for any exit.
"Damn! Damn! Damn it!" I cried.
The water did not slow. Instead it continued to fill the room as I frantically searched for my escape. The water soon reached my knees and, what seemed like seconds later, I was wading through waist high water. As the water continued to rise, I was soon struggling to keep my head above water. It was not enough that the water was filling the room so rapidly but soon the water felt alive. The cold waves kept tossing me back and forth as the water rose and I began to feel like I was in a game of Ping-Pong where I was the ball. Soon, I found myself pulled under the icy water and surrounded by thousands of bubbles. Frantically kicking my feet to keep my head above water, I broke the surface.
Remembering the swimming lessons my grandfather insisted on, I thought about the times I spent with my grandfather learning to swim. I began to feel less scared as I recalled his calm voice and gentle words telling me that I would be safe. As I floated in the rising water, it seemed to respond to my emotions. The thrashing became calmer as I focused on my grandfather’s words. My brief moment of peace did not last. Before I knew it, I had almost reached the ceiling that had no exit and I began to panic. At this rate, I would be trapped and drowned in minutes. As if it was feeding off my fear, the water began to toss me around again.
As the water began to rise up my neck and almost over the top of my head, I tried to calm myself. You are the granddaughter of Mae Veracor and the great granddaughter of Genevieve Silver. You are the descendent of strong women. You have nothing to fear. With these words, the water once again calmed and I was able to tilt my head back above the water. How am I going to get out of this?
